Costa Rican Road Trip Episode 5: From Peak to Paradise

Costa Rican Road Trip Episode 5: From Peak to Paradise

Yesterday, we were high up in Costa Rica’s mountains, soaking up the cool, lush landscape. Today, we’ve arrived at the beach! After another three-hour drive through scenic countryside, we reached Los Sueños, a gem on Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast. My travel rule is simple: if I’m driving more than three hours, we stay somewhere overnight. Anything longer, and there’s no time or energy left to explore. Los Sueños was therefore the perfect place to stay before we continued further south.

Los Sueños is a luxurious getaway that combines relaxation with thrilling outdoor experiences. This beautiful resort is known for its world-class marina, a favorite for deep-sea fishing enthusiasts who flock here for the abundant sailfish, marlin, and mahi-mahi. Even if you’re not fishing, the sight of sleek yachts and fishing boats is impressive. For those who prefer land-based activities, the 18-hole golf course offers incredible views, and the private beach club is perfect for unwinding. There’s no shortage of fine dining options on-site either, so you can enjoy Costa Rican flavors without ever leaving the property. And if you’re up for more action, the lively nearby town of Jacó is a quick drive away, famous for its surfing, vibrant nightlife, and family-friendly activities.

For the next two days, we’re staying at the Marriott in Los Sueños—a 4-star resort with all the bells and whistles. Usually, a stay here would cost hundreds per night, but thanks to my Marriott membership and some pandemic-era discounts, we snagged two nights for just $67.80. Yes, really!

Our first day was all about beach bliss and poolside fun. The sunny weather was perfect, and our kids spent the whole day splashing around, completely lost in play. After the cool mist of the mountains, it felt like pure paradise to just relax and soak up the warmth.

The next day, we decided to try our luck at sea with a fishing charter. The kids were beyond excited, ready to reel in the “big one.” Thirty minutes passed. Then an hour, then two. Despite the anticipation, the fish just weren’t biting, and after three hours, we came back with nothing but sun-kissed skin. But hey, that’s the reality of fishing—sometimes you score, sometimes you get stories instead of fish.

By lunchtime, we were ready for something hearty, so we headed over to Jacó. Just 20 to 30 minutes from Playa Herradura, Jacó is a buzzing coastal town with a laid-back atmosphere and something for everyone. The gentle surf is ideal for beginners, making it a fantastic spot for kids to safely play in the waves. Jacó is also rich in wildlife, with nearby Carara National Park home to colorful scarlet macaws, curious monkeys, and even crocodiles lazing around the Tarcoles River. And for those who crave a bit of adrenaline, the area offers zip-lining, ATV rides, and horseback adventures, making it an outdoor playground for all ages. Jacó is a lively slice of Costa Rican life, capturing the spirit of “pura vida” in every way.

We stopped for lunch at Soda Jacó Rústico, a cozy, local spot just steps from the beach. I love these “sodas”—they’re casual, affordable, and you can see what you’re ordering. The kids picked their plates with ease, and we all enjoyed a delicious, no-fuss meal.

Tomorrow, we’re diving even deeper into Costa Rica’s coastal wonders, venturing south into the jungle. From mountains to beaches to rainforests, this country really does have it all—and we’re soaking up every minute of it!
